Avebury circle is the largest stone circle and standing stone pattern in the world covering an area of 20 acres. There is a village built inside the main circular part of Avebury. The reason the village is there is because when the village was built the area was covered with forest. Only the tops of the stones were showing because they had been buried by dirt during the milleniums. The villagers didn't notice the stones until an archeologist came along and said "Heh, these stones are arranged in a pattern!". After that major digs were held to uncover the stones.During the time that the village was being built the villagers started knocking down standing stones reducing them to rubble then using the stones to build houses and sheds. You may see on the map two small circles in the larger circle. these smaller circles were broken down to build some of the town including a church. |
